The Fast Times

What’s Happening on the Weekend of May 12 + 13?

On Any Sunday
One of these highlights from the coming weekend will definitely keep you busy, whether it sees you in the saddle, at the bunting, or on the couch.

The Weekend

Burt Farm Trail Ride

When it comes to riding in the Bay of Plenty, the Burt Farm is always one of the first choices for locals, whether it’s racin’ or ridin’. That’s ’cause the place is just so much fun to ride.

If you haven’t ridden the place before, you can take our word for it: you’ll have an epic time. But those locals (and riders that have been introduced to the trails by those kind enough to share the love) will know it’s always worth the trip. The trails are regularly changed up, and always groomed, so it’s suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels. The main loop is 20 clicks long, which doesn’t get boring. But there is a shortcut home for those riders that need it.

Now, go make the most of this coming weekend.

The Race

Rock Oil New Zealand VMX Series

Alright, there’s more to the vintage motocross scene than the 1973 Honda CR250M “Elsinore”. In fact, in every single one of the 11 classes that make up the Rock Oil New Zealand VMX Series, there are plenty of bikes that are considered iconic. You can see that for yourself, too, by heading to Taupo for the final round of the series.

From Classic (motos from 1970 to ’74), to Evo (’78 to ’81), and even Enduro, there are a whole lot of classes. While there are always the guns, who are racing some seriously fast weapons (and even the odd “works” bike, no less), the VMX scene is all about having fun.

The series is being supported by Rock Oil, and Darryl August Motorcycles, but each event still needs your support, too. You can do that in the way of lining up on the gate, or on the bunting, supporting the racers and the organisers.

The Reception

2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship

Sure, it’s not like the “old days” when a round of the “outdoors” overlapped – well, it wasn’t really overlapping, since it was dropped in the middle of the season of Supercross – but there’s only a fortnight between the finale of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross and the season opener of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

That’s good for race fans, though, and it means we have a summer – uh, for Kiwis, that’s winter – of racing ahead. So, will Eli Tomac come out swinging, and defend his title? For The Fast Times, the real question is, how will Cody Cooper do in 2018?

Yes, “Coops” is back in Southern California, and hard at work to make his mark in the 2018 season of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. And The Fast Times is the place to keep up with Coops – both on and off the track – ’cause he’ll be dishing the dirt to us, and we’ll have the inside of his entire campaign, from beginning to end.

Standby, Kiwis.
