Have you ridden at the Burt Farm? We have, and we love it, and that’s why we know it takes a special kind of person to ride, let alone race, those trails for six hours. That sums up the Scott 6 Hour, a stalwart on the New Zealand off-road racing calendar, where riders of all skills and speed come together to shred the trails of Matata. The 2018 edition of the Scott 6 Hour was run under clear skies, and hot dry conditions, something that is unheard of over the Kiwi “summer”. The credit must go to Power Adventures for making sure the trails were well prepped, despite the total lack of rain leading into the event.
Scott 6 Hour
While it takes a special kind of rider, with the right kind of grit, to race the event as part of a team, it takes a rider of a whole ‘nother level to go it alone in the Ironman and Ironwoman classes. In the former, it was Brad Groombridge who took the win, proving that he’s not to be underestimated when he lines up to race any event on the dirt. By the time the teams swapped out the first rider, “Groomy” was out in front, and would not be beaten, storming to the overall and the win in the Ironman class. All up, he did 13 laps, completed in six hours and five minutes. But he was kept honest for the overall, with the Youth pairing of Callum Dudson and Ethan Harris running at almost the same pace, just one minute behind.
The winners of each class included the likes of Rachael Archer – who just finished up the Woman’s Cup in the NZ MX Nationals – taking out the Ironwoman class. The other classes included the Team Small Bore, won by Zane Ericksen and Shane Howard, and Team Mixed, taken out by Nicolette Epps and Ben Townley. The Team Big Bore class was taken out by the pairing of Phillip Goodwright and Phil Singleton, who were a further minute behind the Team Youth duo of Dudson and Harris.
